Aunt Lil’s Christmas Dinner

aunt lil’s christmas dinner in Louisville, KYChristmas is just three day short days away. We have our menu all lined up with vintage recipes. Here’s what Dan and I will be eating in Aunt Lil’s Kitchen:

Cranberry Orange Mold Salad – recipe from Watkins Hearthside Cook Book, 1952. aunt lil’s christmas dinner in Milwaukee, WI

Baked Ham with Brandy Sauce – recipe from Ford’s Treasury of Favorite Recipes from Famous Eating Places, 1950aunt lil’s christmas dinner in Albuquerque, NM

Harvard Beets, recipe from Watkins Hearthside Cook Book (a childhood favorite of Dan’s)

Whipped Potatoes

The MacKenzie family Plum Pudding, Dan’s mother’s recipe handed down from Scotland to Prince Edward Island, Canada to Quincy, MA.

Cannonball Cookies, recipe from Tasty Treats for the Holidays, printed by Rochester Gas & Electric, no date but probably in the early 1960s.

In case your wondering what an authentic 1937 Christmas dinner menu might be, here is the  American Cookery Magazine‘s sample menu.

Grapefruit Juice Cocktail

Roast Goose with Fruit Stuffing

Parsley Mashed Potato          Giblet Gravy

Buttered Onions      Shredded String Beans

Barberry Jelly

Endive Salad     Stuffed Olive Dressing

Cranberry Pie

Coffee          Nuts

Just a caution, just like today very few of us follow magazine suggestions word for word. This was the ideal to which  women could strive. And in 1937 when times were still tough in America, this menu was out of reach for many.

We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. I’ll blog about the best from this year’s Christmas menu.
