The Best Fire Starters For Backpacking of 2026

A fire starter is a tool that is used to easily start a fire. They come in many different forms, but all have the same goal- to help you get a fire going quickly and easily.

There are many reasons why you might need a fire starter while backpacking. Maybe you want to cook dinner, or keep warm on a cold night. Or maybe you just want to have a campfire for fun. No matter what your reasons are, having a fire starter is key.

There are many different types of fire starters for backpacking. Some are more basic, like matches. Others are more high-tech, like magnesium strikers. No matter what your needs are, there is sure to be a fire starter that is perfect for you.

Here are some of the most common types of fire starters:

• Matches: Matches are one of the most basic fire starters out there. They are easy to use and light. However, they can be easy to lose track of, so make sure to keep them in a safe place.

• Lighter: Lighters are another popular choice for fire starters. They are easy to use and come in many different varieties. Plus, they usually have a longer lifespan than matches.

• Magnesium Striker: A magnesium striker is a high-tech way to start a fire. It uses a small amount of magnesium to create a spark that will start a flame. While it can be more difficult to use than other fire starters, it is very reliable.

Now that you know about the different types of fire starters, how do you choose the one that's right for you? Here are some tips:

• Think about what type of adventurer you are. If you like things simple, then matches might be the best option for you. But if you like to be prepared for anything, then go with a non-match fire starter.
• Consider the conditions where you'll be using your fire starter. If you'll be in wet or windy conditions, then it's important to choose a fire starter that is weatherproof. Matches won't work well if they get wet, so consider choosing something like a lighter instead.
• Think about what kind of fuel sources you'll be using. Some fire starters work best with certain kinds of fuel sources (like matches with sticks, and lighters with propane tanks). Make sure to choose one that will work with the fuel sources available to you.
