Why it made the list: It is simple, light and proven, with 4.5 stars from about 2,120 ratings, the most of our picks. A bag-lined bucket design means there is no tank to empty at a dump station, which suits road trips. The removable cover seals in odor, per the listing, which matters in a closed car. That makes it our top rated portable toilet for car trips.

Highlights:

• Built-in paper holder.
• Standard 8-gallon bags are easy to find.
• Light enough to lift out of a loaded trunk.

Trade-off:

• It does not fold, so it takes more trunk space than a folding toilet.

We did not test these toilets. We compared weight and packed size, durability and weather resistance, comfort and ease of setup, features for road trips and campsites, and warranty and value. Weight vs comfort: car camping or backpacking

A car carries the weight, so the real limit is space. Folding toilets take the least room, buckets are a middle ground, and flushing toilets are most comfortable but need a big cargo area. Backpackers should look at trowels and bag kits instead. Our best portable toilet for camping guide covers more campsite options.

Weather & season ratings

Portable toilets have no season ratings. Hot cars speed up odor, so seal bags and empty tanks promptly. In freezing weather, water in flush tanks can freeze, which favors bag-based toilets.

Setup, packing & storage

Keep the toilet, bags, paper and sanitizer together in one bin. Secure it so it cannot slide while you drive. Clean and dry it before storing.

Materials, repairs & warranty

Most portable toilets use ABS, HDPE or PP plastics. PLAYBERG and Hapoon each list a 1-year warranty. Check seals and latches on flushing models before each trip.

How much should you spend?

• Under $30: Folding frames like the Hapoon.
• Under $100: Bucket toilets like the PLAYBERG and basic flushing toilets.
