Fit & sizing tips

Try shoes late in the day with your hiking socks. Leave a thumb's width in front of your longest toe so you do not jam toes on descents. Your heel should stay locked when you walk uphill. Some hikers go a half size up from their running size for foot swelling.

Waterproof vs breathable

Breathable mesh dries fast and keeps feet cooler, which many hikers prefer even in wet areas. Waterproof shoes keep feet dry in cool, damp conditions, but once water gets in over the top, they dry slowly. Choose by season and climate.

Layering & season

In summer, pair mesh shoes with thin socks. In cold or wet seasons, a waterproof shoe and merino socks help. For snow, add gaiters or switch to boots.

Care & durability

Rinse off mud, air dry away from heat and remove insoles to dry. Rotate two pairs if you hike often. Watch for worn lugs and flattened cushioning.

How much should you spend?
